Cannot be completely chemical-free
You should be aware that you cannot keep the air totally free from bugs and harmful ingredients inside your home. But you could at least keep as clean as possible. This is because if you don’t, then they circulate within the inside of the home for long periods of time which makes it more harmful than outside.
Effects of indoor air pollution
The effects of air pollution can range from mild to very serious. Depending on how your body is exposed to these harmful agents and how long it has been, it could cause:

If this is not addressed, it could lead to more serious conditions like:

- Legionnaire’s disease

What you should do really is to first find out where the sources are. This will then give you the method into improving your air quality indoors.
- Control emissions – This can be done by checking your cooking appliances. Gas stoves and heating equipment usually have emission control. Then, check around your home to see if you use any synthetic fragrances. Be mindful when you buy scented items so that they do not include synthetic or artificial material.
- Air filters – ensure that you clean the equipment that filter air in your home. This includes dehumidifiers, humidifiers and air-conditioning units. They must be clean as dirty ones will contribute to air pollution in more ways than you can imagine. Meanwhile, check your air ducts and furnace filters.
- Fumes from your vehicle – If you have an indoor garage, NEVER leave your vehicle’s engine on. The fumes will circulate into your home. That is among the most harmful and dangerous way as carbon monoxide is among the top source of lung cancer.
- Ventilation – having air-conditioning in your home is great but that does not mean you do not need to air your space every once a while. The best practice is to do this on a weekly basis. Leave the windows open and let the air and sunray in for at least 4 hours. You need to let the fresh air in and let the polluted air out.
- Purify your air – use natural methods to purify the air inside the house. You can use ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, essential oils and citrus which are known to have great antiseptic functions. Meanwhile, try to use natural ingredients to make your own air freshener instead of buying them from shelves. This can be done with simple stuff like cinnamon and cloves.
- Bedding products – Detergents are most commonly used to wash your bed-sheets and curtains. Try to wash them with hot water frequently. This will kill the pollutants and allergens once and for all. Take note that cotton has one of the highest contents of pesticides which is found in most of our bedding products.
- Houseplants – plant some vegetation in your home that helps to maintain a natural eco-system. Urban farming helps. This will surely remove the pollution from your home. Consider planting the likes of Jade Plant, Spider Plant or Bromeliad.
- Furnishing – eliminate furniture that contributes to pollution. Rugs are among the most problematic ones. Use hardwood floors instead of carpets. Take note of the mattress you are using and try to go for organic mattresses.
