Whether you know it or not, food consumption today is almost entirely different from how it has been 20 or 30 years ago. If you haven’t already know this, processed foods dominate most of our meals whether it is at home, in restaurants and even at health-conscious outlets.
Sugar Consumption the main killer
Refined sugar, most particularly processed fructose is one of the top killers in the world. Added sugar alone contributes to about 350 calories per day in the US. That is the same as about 22 teaspoons of sugar. Imagine that!
If that is not enough, some stats to get you started:
- Sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit drinks, grain-based desserts are among the most common sources of added sugar
- A majority of people get their daily calories from added sugar
Make no mistake about it, fruit juices are in this category. And you thought that drinking fruit juice is entirely safe. It could well be the largest contributor to heart diseases, the top killer in Malaysia.
Processed Vegetable Oils is not the solution
Yes, you would have been told that fats are dangerous and you should start using vegetable oil for cooking or food preparation. But did you know that processed vegetable oil is worse than traditional fat? Recent research has shown that corn or canola oil, touted as healthy options are not any better than animal fats or coconut oil. When vegetable oil go through the process, some harmful trans fats are created.
Low-fat food? Are they true?
Totally untrue! A lot have been said about saturated fat and cholesterol with researches being carried out to prove that they are harmful. That is why people are opting for low-fat diet and such. Studies have already proven that they are not any better when it comes to preventing stroke and heart diseases. Hence, there is no reason to change your entire diet to a low-fat one.
Vegetable oil causing problems with fatty acid
You might not know this yet but taking increased vegetable oil will cause your body to have an unbalanced fatty acid composition. This means that you could well have a lot of omega-6 fats. When that happens, you are at high risk of cardiovascular problems, cancer and other terminal diseases. Take note that the ideal ratio is 1:1 when it comes to omega-3 and omega-6 composition.
Don’t worry about taking too much eggs
This is one assumption which has been around for decades. Some health gurus would have told you that eggs are related to cholesterol. In fact, they are among the most nutritious foods around as long as they are organically raised from pastured hens. You might not want to go out and take all the egg yolks you can find though. Take them in moderation.
What does this mean?
Ultimately, it simply means that people are leading unhealthier lives than before. In fact, you are consuming more processed foods than ever before in history. People are twice as obese as 20 years ago. They are not in control of what they eat and they are reading too much from the wrong sources.
