Understanding your blood pressure

Your blood pressure is one area that must be regulated in order to maintain a healthy life. It is linked to almost every activity that you do on a daily basis because it will determine if you rest well, if you work well and ensures that you do not succumb to health-related problems in a long term.

Your blood pressure, if not controlled properly and maintained would lead to serious problems that include heart attacks, diabetes and many others. So it is very important that you know your blood pressure and understand how it affects your general health in order to keep your body in the best possible condition at all times.

Always make sure that your blood pressure is under the 140/80 mm Hg. This is the standard reading of blood pressure. 140 refer to the systolic reading while 80 refer to the diastolic readings respectively. If your systolic reading is above 140, then it is time to see your doctor and see how you can keep it down. Invest in a digital blood pressure measurement machine to constantly keep tap of your blood pressure.

If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and is given medication, you must ensure that you take them every day as prescribed.

In this context, it does not mean that you keep your blood pressure as low as possible as too low the pressure would have another set of problems. The aim is to keep your pressure at an acceptable and healthy rate.

Always exercise and keep watch of your weight. Obesity is the biggest contribution to high blood pressure. Check your BMI or body mass index and obtain your doctor’s advice on how to achieve the ideal weight.

If possible, NEVER consume food with high salt and sodium contains. Malaysian food is known to contain high levels of salt so it is important to inform the cook to try and minimize that.
