Prostate Cancer

Contrary to popular beliefs, there are actually survivors of cancer of many kinds. If treated property and detected early, steps can be taken to stop the cancer cells from spreading and be contained. A man in Malaysia recently survived prostate cancer, one of the most fatal diseases in the country and in the world today. After his ordeal, he dedicated his life to doing good deeds and got involved in charity drives and events to help raise funds for medical purposes.

After discovering that he had Stage 2 prostate cancer, he went for a biopsy, MRI and a bone scan. He could either go for a radical prostatectomy, which means surgery to remove the gland and some tissues or radiation and hormonal treatment or to wait and see how the cancer develops. He then decided to take the radiation route. In 3 year’s time, he overcame the disease.

Prevalence
Prostate cancer is cancer that attacks the prostate gland which is part of the male reproductive system. The prostate engulfs the urethra which is responsible to channel urine out. It is most commonly found in men above 75 years of age. The younger men (usually below 40) rarely contract this disease. It could be hereditary and is most common among men who consume a lot of alcohol.

In fact, vegetarian men are less likely to contract prostate cancer while men who eat a lot of meat with fats are in the high-risk group. The most common factor about prostate cancer is that it usually happens at the later stage of life. However, men are encouraged to go for a PSA blood test so that they can detect prostate cancers before they cause more damage. Early symptoms include slow or delayed start when urinating, leakage of urine, blood in the urine or in the semen, pain in the lower back and pelvic bones and others. High PSA level will need a prostate biopsy. From there, the Gleason score (rate of the cancer stage) will help you to determine what the next step would be.

The only positive that you can draw out of prostate cancer is that unlike certain cancer, it is treatable. It is a slow-growing disease which means that if you detect it early, you can subdue it from remission. Furthermore, it can be deterred through your daily diet. Eat more vegetables and food with high Omega-3 fatty acids. Reduce fattening food at all times.

Prevention
Prostate cancer is very much like every type of cancer where you are at risk of developing this disease after doing something wrong for a long period of time. This enabled the cancer cells to develop and eventually become full-blown. As such, prevention of prostate cancer is best done through a healthy diet as it is where the prostate gland of the male reproduction system is affected. By practicing a balanced diet which is rich with fiber and minerals, you reduce the risk significantly.

Diagnostics
A blood test will be required to detect prostate cancer in the body. This is usually done using a PSA or prostate-specific antigen blood test. Other known methods include a DRE or digital rectal exam. A prostate biopsy meanwhile is needed to carry out an actual diagnosis of this cancer. The doctor will usually check if you have any symptoms like blood in the urine or any form of pain in the bones. Physical examinations like the DRE will be carried out in which a lubricated finger is inserted into the rectum to fell any bumps or growth around the prostate areas.

Statistics
In the United States, it has been reported that prostate cancer is the most common forms of diseases found in men. This is almost similar in many parts of the world especially in Asian countries where food is known to be more oily and unhealthy. Generally, 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Despite this, not every man diagnosed with prostate cancer will die from it. Instead, it has been found that prostate cancer is among the few which have the highest recovery rates. This disease is most common among men 65 years and above while it is very rare among those below the age of 40.

Specialists
Your regular doctor must be the first level of treatment you should seek if you have any problems with your prostate or the surrounding areas. This is where you need to seek medication to cure any pains or illness before the situation worsens. In most cases, your family physician will be able to run diagnostic tests to check the extent of your condition and if it is found that you might have more serious problems like prostate cancer or even at a minor risk of this disease, then you might be referred to a specialist. This is where you will have to consult a urologist who is specially trained to treat patients with problems in the urinary tract like your bladder and kidneys. Besides that, you might be prescribed to take steroid tablets when hormone therapy is not effective when the cancer cells become immune to it. This can be done through dexamethasone, a type of steroid treatment used to shrink the tumour and stop its development
