Depending on the place you are having this dish, it is usually cooked with thick soy sauce, prawns, chilly, bean sprouts, vegetables, eggs and in cockles. In some parts of Penang, it even comes with crab meat. The most significant contributor to the calories of the Char Kway Teow is mostly the prawns, cockles and the oil.
A typical dish of Char Kway Teow is about 750 calories. This is considered to be high but there are some who add eggs, cockles and prawns which will spike the calories count. Some stalls cook this dish with duck eggs which will add another 130 calories to one serving which means it could well reach 1,000 calories.
