Tips on how to reduce eye strain when using the computer

The computer is one of the most important devices in our daily lives. In fact, it has become quite a big part of our working and leisure lives where we are spending hours on it. It is a known fact that looking at the monitor screen for long hours would be damaging for our eye sight in the long term.


However, not everyone has the luxury of not looking at the monitor screen for long hours so if you are those who use the computer throughout the day, you might want to take note of the following tips which will help you to maintain your vision-health at its bet.

Eye checks – this is something you need to do at least once every 6 months. If you are wearing corrective lenses, chances are there will be changes every few months. You will notice that the changes could be considerably high which means that you will need to change your spectacles or take other measures. You must ensure that the eye examiner is aware of the hours you are spending looking at the computer.

Lights – Look at the place you are seated. Ensure that there are proper lighting because excessive bright lights would be very detrimental. If you are seated next to the window, try to minimize the sunlight coming in. Inside, try to use the dimmable lighting system like LEDs so that you can adjust the brightness and intensity. Try not to work under an overhead fluorescent light. On top of that, minimize on glares.

LCDs – the biggest contribution to computer vision syndrome is the older CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors. If you are still using those old dinosaur-like machines, its time to invest in a LCD monitor. You will not regret it.

Display settings in your computer – you do not need to be a computer expert to do this but you MUST adjust the display settings to suit your environment. This can be done in the brightness section where you should have a ‘warm’ desktop. Always increase the text size if you are typing a document or working with text to minimize strain on your eyes. Where possible, use light and warm colours like grey, light blue and pastel green.

Exercise your eyes – take short breaks between tasks to give your eyes a break. A good practice is to blink your eyes whenever you can as it helps to moisten the surroundings. It has been found that people working with computers blink less than those who don’t.
