The growing child into the adolescent or teenage years requires proper nutrition and minerals in order for the body and mind to fully develop. In some situations, teenagers could develop anemia which could be very troublesome in terms of treatment and recovery.
Anemia is a situation where there is low blood hemoglobin concentration in which the hemoglobin plays the role of carrying oxygen to the tissues around the body. If there is lack of hemoglobin, it means that the organs are lacking in oxygen and will then lead to major complications.
The normal level of hemoglobin for the adult female and adult male should be 11.5 to 16.5g/dL and 12.5 to 18.5g/dL respectively. In most cases, Anemia is not regarded as a disease but could occur when there is extensive blood loss or when blood cell formation is not as efficient as desired. Blood loss can be due to accidents while menstruation among females.
When a person has deficiency in certain minerals like iron, vitamin B12, folate and erythropoietin, it could then result in anemia. As such, it becomes all the more important for teenagers to take sufficient supplements or have a healthy diet practice that ensure there are constantly adequate supply of these minerals to complement the production of hemoglobin in the body.
Besides that, anemia could be caused by deficiency in other minerals like Vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin copper, riboflavin and folic acid. It has been found that many teens today are unaware that they have anemia mainly because of their active lifestyles which do not warrant the time and space to take enough supplements.
A person with this condition would feel tired all the time or suffer from dizziness while shortness of breath and pale skin are common symptoms as well. One must be careful with this as it could lead to heart failure as it becomes weak over time.
