Tilapia is one of the most common fish dishes in Asian food. Malaysia in particular, Tilapia is cooked in several ways where it is often served in seafood restaurants. While taking fish is good because of their high contents in iodine and omega-3 fatty acids, you might want to avoid the Tilapia fish due to the many reasons. You have to be aware that most Tilapia served are farmed fishes which makes them somewhat unnatural.
Inflammation – It has been found in recent studies that farm-raised Tilapia could encourage inflammation within your body. If you have this condition inside your body, the fish could aggravate the area and this can cause cardiovascular diseases, asthma and others. Some studies have even found that it is worse than manufactured foods like sausages and hamburgers.
Pollutants – Fish that were farmed are known to be exposed to pollutants that can cause cancer. The risk here is 10 times higher than fish caught in the wild. This is attributed to the feed used that could include chicken poop, pig and duck waste, among others.
Harmful Chemicals – Taking farmed Tilapia puts you at risk of higher antibiotics and pesticides. In fact, the farms are more crowded which puts the fish at higher risk of being among some which has diseases and such. Because of this, antibiotics are used while to keep sea lice away, pesticides are used.
Omega-3 to Omega-6 Ratio – If you think eating farmed Tilapia gives you the nutrients you need, think again! Farm-bred fishes have much lower levels of omega-3 to omega-6 ratios and other minerals.
Dioxin – Dioxins are very toxic and can cause negative consequences in the body. This can put you at risk of cancer. Taking farm Tilapia gives your body higher levels of this chemical and it takes a long time for the body to channel it out.
